Recovery
How Can I Improve My HRV?
Short answer
Heart rate variability rises when parasympathetic recovery outpaces stress load, so the levers are sleep, alcohol, training load management, and daily breathing or relaxation practice. HRV is highly individual, so compare your values only against your own baseline — never against someone else's numbers.
The reliable levers
- Remove alcohol: often the single most visible overnight HRV suppressor.
- Extend sleep and keep wake time consistent.
- Balance training: too much intensity too often depresses HRV; aerobic base work usually raises it over weeks.
- Slow breathing practice, around six breaths per minute for five to ten minutes daily.
- Manage psychological stress load, which shows up in HRV as clearly as physical load.
How to read your data
Measure at the same time each day — overnight or on waking — and read the seven-day rolling average, not single mornings. Absolute HRV varies enormously between individuals due to age, genetics and measurement method, so cross-person comparisons are meaningless.
