Biological age
How Accurate Are Biological Age Calculators?
Short answer
Biological age calculators are estimates from statistical models, not measurements, so treat the number as a range rather than a fact. Blood-based models such as PhenoAge and laboratory epigenetic clocks correlate with health outcomes at the population level; lifestyle-based estimates are coarser but capture the behaviors you can change. All of them are far more useful as a trend over time than as a single reading.
Why estimates vary between methods
Each model was trained on a different dataset with a different outcome in mind, and each uses different inputs. Two methods can legitimately produce results several years apart for the same person because they are summarizing different aspects of physiology.
How to read your result responsibly
- Compare like with like: same method, same conditions, same time of day where relevant.
- Look at the direction across three or more readings before concluding anything.
- Treat unexpected results as a prompt to talk to a clinician about the underlying markers, not as a diagnosis.
