What Is the Best Diet for Longevity?
Short answer
No single named diet wins. The patterns associated with the longest healthspan in observational research share the same features: mostly whole plants, adequate protein, healthy fats, high fiber, minimal ultra-processed food, limited added sugar and limited alcohol. Mediterranean-style eating is the best-studied version of that pattern, and adherence over years matters more than the label.
The shared features of long-lived eating patterns
- Vegetables, legumes, whole grains and fruit as the base.
- Adequate protein, weighted higher with age to protect muscle.
- Olive oil, nuts and fatty fish as primary fat sources.
- Very little ultra-processed food, refined sugar or alcohol.
- Consistent energy balance rather than cycles of restriction and rebound.
Why adherence beats optimization
A pattern you follow for a decade outperforms a theoretically superior one you abandon in six weeks. Choose the version that fits your culture, budget and schedule.
